Writing Update

Been a bit quiet for a while, with no new stories to bring you. This is because when I embarked on finishing off the final story of the Aiella sequence, I realised it was all wrong. In that story, which I started writing nearly two years ago now, the first thing that happens is that Aiella gets a bit … killed.

Yes, I know, killing off your MC is such a bright idea 🙂 The only excuse I can offer is that I was in a very bad mood at the time. Anyway, I wrote more of this post-Aiella story, introducing new characters, and I was working towards finishing it recently when it suddenly occurred to me that it wouldn’t do.

This was mainly because my Muse objected most strenuously to Aiella’s death, and a writer who does not listen to their Muse is a fool. (I might add that everybody who has ever read it objected, too, so she was definitely in the majority).  I ploughed on for a bit, anyway, not wanting to waste the effort expended (a classic case of sunk cost fallacy, or, I was in blood stepp’d in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o’er).

But as I ploughed on I got to thinking what would the story look like if Aiella lived? And it didn’t take long before I realised that it would, in fact, look a lot better. So I slammed on the brakes and started again … I’ve been able to recycle quite a lot of the dead version, one way or another (and it’s remarkable how the same dialogue can completely change in meaning in another context), but there has inevitably been a lot of new writing needed, especially as I have now gone past the point the old story had got to. (Sort of. It’s complicated).

So I’ve been mostly doing that. It’ll be a while before the finished story appears, as there is a lot to write yet … and then after that I need to carry on, and begin a new cycle. But that is, literally, another story 🙂
